The temple is located 330 meters at the mid peak of Seoraebong. It was originally called Naejangsa but later renamed Baekryeonam since Yeongeunam, another temple, was renamed Naejangsa. Later, the temple was renamed again to Byeokryeonam. Soon after, Kim Changhan (the former Governor of Jeongeup) placed the calligraphy tablet of ‘Gonaejang’ on the temple, in order to differentiate it from the present Naejangsa, resulting in the final name of this area now known as Gonaejang. In the old days, it was located in the position of the main temple. Established by Hwanhaeseonsa in the 20th year of Baekje’s King Uijawang’s rule (AD 660), Baekhakseonsa added Geukrakbojeon, a new main temple, and also added a dormitory and built the seondang (Hosangsorim), which was destroyed by fire in 1951 during the Korean War.
Chusa Kim Jeonghui practiced asceticism here, and suggested renaming ‘Baekryeonam’ as ‘Byeokryeonam.’ He hung a calligraphy tablet at the site. The tablet was tragically destroyed by fire during the Korean War. To the west of the temple, there lies a seokjongbudo (a small, bell-shaped, stone pagoda, where the sarira of Buddhist priests are enshrined) from an unknown period. On the stone wall behind the temple is a calligraphy carving by the renowned regional calligrapher, Mongryeondang Kim Minjin. The carving reads「Seokranjeong」.

According to legend that originates from the stone embankment of the temple, Huimukdaesa used to throw rocks from the peak of Seoraebong. One day, his best pupil, Huicheon, caught the rocks and piled them up into an embankment. In 1986, the temple was renovated by a Government restoration plan. The restoration is still ongoing. Gonaejang is a noted place that is regarded as the first scenic place of Mt Naejang, and the location of cheonbuljeon (the hall/place where a thousand statues/statuettes of Buddha are enshrined). It is said that Obong Kim Jemin sang the spring scenery at this site. It is unknown when Baekryeongsa was demoted to Baekryeonam
