Located under Bulchul
Peak, the temple is
said to have been
established by Jeogamdaesa
in the 3rd year of
King Seonjong’s rule
in the Goryeon Dynasty.
But history remains
unclear. There was
once a famous sitting
ivory (some suggest
jade) statue of Buddha
with its head facing
north, as well as
a small sleeping statue
of Buddha with the
head facing north.
They were famous because
they were the only
of their kind in Korea.
The name, Weonjeokam,
originates from this
site. It was often
compared to the sleeping
Buddha statue of Wabulsa
in Beijing, China.
It is thought that
the Japanese stole
the statue in 1910.
Weonjeokam was a large
temple with seven
kans. It was tragically
destroyed by fire
during the Korean
War. Ten years after
the war, Beopmyeong
restored the temple
to what is now the
present-day, smaller
temple. This site
is famous for Wonjeongmojong
and the nutmeg forest
that surrounds it.
The magnificent scenery
of the nutmeg forest
on the east foot of
the mountain is Mt
Naejang’s best-known
scenery. |
